A long time ago, ...Jake and Tori decided to put their extensive, yet admittedly novice, knowledge of HTML 4 to good use, and start their own web design company. Jake's focus was on coding and accessability, while Tori's centered on graphic design and layout. It was a harmonious partnership. Unfortunately it never really got out of the hobby stage. The thing about Accessability... You might tell from the picture that Jake had an unusual condition. Cancer rendered him blind as a child. Jake navigated the World Wide Web with the aide of a screen reading program called JAWS. In designing our personal sites, as well as planning for this business, we were always conscious of our pages being accessable by such programs. It is for this reason that we avoid using Flash...screen readers can't read words in a flash program, because it is basically an image. Though Jake passed away a few years ago, we still endeavor to design pages that are completely user friendly, so long as it doesn't take away too much from the look you want. Some things never change...
Back to basics... Ever come across blinking text and wish it would blink itself into oblivion? At Transcendental, we don't believe in using flashy excess just because we can. We operate on basic principles, such as there is nothing you need Flash for that we can't do with an animated GIF, and the only good Java is functional Java. In addition, we do not use HTML editing programs (the WYSIWYG editors). The majority of our HTML is hand-written, and any more complicated code is carefully copy/pasted and altered to fit the needs of the page. This allows us to maintain complete control over the way a page looks and functions.
So what's this I hear about There is no good way to price a design service. An elaborate looking site might only take 4 hours to construct, whereas a basic archive could take days. There's also the matter of how much maintenance a site requires after the initial construction.
You may have noticed that we're fairly laid back. What kind of business are we trying to run here that everything's negotiable? Simple, a side business. That's right, this is not our sole source of income, granted we'd like to make some money designing, but we have such a good time designing that we just can't charge an arm and a leg for it. In pricing other comparable services, we were appalled at some of the fees we found! That being said, payment will be expected for our services. Payment method will also be negotiable, but for your convenience and ours, we will strongly urge that all payments be made via PayPal. And finally...
