Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor

The Vampire Zaraina

I am the vampire Zaraina. You may call me Zaraina, or Rain is okay too. It is not my real name anyway, I stole it from my very first victim, a half-elf child, stole it from her as easily as I stole her lifeblood. Never call me Lady Zaraina, for I am no lady. I am more likely to be found rough-housing with the boys in the mud than primping and fluttering my eyes. I am highly intelligent, I don't know how other perceive that, whether as arrogant or intimidating, but it lends itself to my chronic shy streak. I probably appear aloof and superior when you first meet me, but I warm up quickly to new friends. I cannot stand a lack of intelligence in others, which maybe makes me the perfect vampire, for where else does one find a lack of intelligence but in large groups of humans? Do the world a favor, eat a human. Hrmm, maybe I should market that as a bumper sticker.

I was turned only a few short years ago. My sire, Disagod, brought me to this city and into this darkness, whispering lovely promises as self-deified males are often inclined to do. He promised to show me the night. He forgot that I was already intimate with the night, long before he ever entered my world. We roamed the city together for such a very short time, relatively speaking, before his attentions were drawn elsewhere, away from me. Gone into the darkness, and I haven't seen him since. Yes, there is a lingering bitterness. Should I stumble upon him tomorrow, I will likely try to bleed him dry.

So I wandered, and I do mean aimlessly. I slaughtered every human I came across, I drank a lot of blood wine and beer. I sired a few children of my own, but none of them had the will to stand against eternity, and they all perished quickly. I had no purpose, no direction. I watched as stronger vampires scrambled around in search of their powers, even stealing from me to achieve their goals. I just didn't care. I fed, and I wandered, and that was it. I was numb.

And then a Capadocian found me.

I don't remember who exactly extended the invitation, might've even been our Lord Himself for all I know. The invitation was very intriguing. Never in my wandering did I imagine that some of these other undead figures around me belong to something bigger than themselves, or that I might be able to become a part of it. That very night, I made my way to the gates of what would become my new home, and became a member of this huge and powerful family.

I was assigned to the House of the Empty Spiral, a newly formed faction of loyal Capadocians under the direction of a vampire named GhostChild. Over the past couple of months I've seen member- and leadership change like socks. Many have gone from us and left sadness and resentment in the hearts of some of the clan elders. As a newbie, all I did was try to keep track. Among my dark siblings that remained, I have found good company. There's McDoVen, our House General, whom I affectionately think of as "Monkey Boy" (I told him this, and he thought it was amusing), and there's the ever-popular SlickChick, our Clan Den Mother, and oh so many others. I've even managed to become friendly with our Lord Capadocious himself.

I came into the clan on the eve of an impending war. I got the impression that the clan was under prepared for battle. There was an influx of new members around that time (probably why I got the invite in the first place), and a push by the elders for us to get our powers ASAP. This was a first for me. As I've said, attaining powers never interested me in the past. But soon I acquired a level of Thievery, and began putting it to good use to grow stronger. I wanted to feel that I was contributing in a positive way to my new family. I was still very weak by comparison, but I was ready to die for the clan if it came to that.

There was a short-lived alliance with another clan in the city, I can't really remember which group it was, that's how brief it was. I was lurking in the general meeting hall, the Masterdom, keeping to the shadows and not really talking to anyone. The other clan's leader, a vampire named Cerridwen, had her pet human post a notice about the need for a bookkeeper, whose job it would be to keep track of the kills our alliance achieved in the coming war. She saw me, noted my interest in the position, and brought me into the lighted center of the room. I was about to begin organizing the library, readying it for the data I would collect, when it was announced that a) we would not be going to war after all, and b) our not going to war was part of a compromise which involved the dissolving of the alliance. So the other clan was gone, Cerridwen was gone, and so was my new position.

But Lord Capadocious took note of me and asked for my services in a similar capacity. I became the Secretary of Clan Capadocious. Because I was still rather powerless, I was thrilled to be lending my talents to my family this way. I began the daunting task of recordkeeping, writing down names of members and former members, contact information, positions, activity, any parameters that our Lord required. I have gone from house to house, meeting their members, scribbling information into my ledgers. It's weary work, and I often get homesick for my own House, but I love it. Later, GhostChild promoted me within the House to Morale Leader, but I don't feel I serve this position as well as I do Clan Secretary.

War is ever looming on the horizon. Our clan grows stronger every day, and we are ready and waiting for what the future holds for us, which I'm sure will be nothing short of total domination over all we perceive. And I, the vampire Zaraina, will be there as always, to keep the records and tell the stories.

of the House of the Empty Spiral,
Secretary of Clan Capadocious
